Our second Community Heroes in the Spotlight for February is PACT – who support people with their physical recovery following treatment for cancer. PACT was originally set up by Gail Hillier when a small local government grant became available to support people with cancer with physical rehabilitation. As a qualified Pilates teacher with a background in nursing, Gail is well-placed to deliver these classes.
The grant finished but Gail realised the classes were more than just physical rehabilitation. The group had become supportive of each other and was helping with the emotional fallout from cancer and the treatment. Gail continued delivering the classes to anyone interested and PACT became a charity at the end of 2024.
Gail said “I love running these classes and seeing how people progress. It has made me realise that recovery from cancer treatment goes much deeper than just physical mobility.”

PACT (Pilates After Cancer Treatment) is designed to support individuals in their recovery journey following cancer treatment. Their primary focus is rebuilding physical strength, enhancing mobility, and improving overall well-being through tailored Pilates exercises. These sessions are carefully structured to meet the unique needs of participants, helping them regain confidence in their bodies in a safe and nurturing environment.
PACT understand that recovery is not just physical, but also emotional. That’s why they place a strong emphasis on fostering mental well-being through the power of community. Participants are welcomed into a supportive group where friendships are formed, and shared experiences become a source of encouragement.
To further enrich this journey, they organise regular social activities and outings, offering opportunities to connect, unwind, and celebrate progress together. PACT is more than a Pilates group—it’s a community dedicated to helping individuals regain strength, resilience, and joy in life after cancer treatment.
Classes take place at 9.30-10.30 on Friday mornings at The Junction in Broadstone. Classes are open to anyone in the BCP and Dorset area recovering from Cancer Treatment. For more information please contact via Facebook – Pilates After Cancer Treatment (PACT)
