Wessex Cancer Support believe that no one should face cancer alone. From the moment someone walks through their doors, whether a patient, a family member, or a loved one, their volunteers offer a haven of comfort, understanding, and practical support. There will be a friendly face, a listening ear, a cosy cuppa, and access to vital services like counselling, complementary therapies, and support groups.
Behind every warm welcome and every moment of solace, there’s a team of truly exceptional individuals who are the very heartbeat of the centres: volunteers. This short film shines a well-deserved spotlight on these incredible unsung heroes and Community Heroes award finalists at the Voluntary Service Awards 2025.
Wessex Cancer Support simply wouldn’t be able to operate without the tireless dedication of their Volunteer Befrienders. They are the first point of contact for many, helping to create the warm, welcoming space that makes clients feel safe and supported from the moment they arrive.
Befrienders do much more than make tea or bake delicious cakes. They are trained in the art of listening, offering a compassionate ear to those feeling overwhelmed, lost, afraid, or anxious following a cancer diagnosis. Imagine the relief of finding someone who truly understands, someone who can sit with you through the emotional ups and downs, and help navigate the often confusing “maze” of information and appointments. That’s what Befrienders do, day in and day out.
A Wessex Cancer Support team member said, “The work the befrienders do makes such a difference to our clients. Sometimes it is not easy to listen to the pain and heartbreak clients are feeling, and this can be challenging, difficult work. I just want to do something for my volunteers, to give back, make them feel as loved and supported as they make our clients feel, and for them to know how very much they are appreciated.”
This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the spirit behind the new short film and our way of saying a “thank you” to these dedicated souls. The film captures the essence of their invaluable contributions, highlighting the genuine connections they forge and the tangible difference they make in the lives of those facing cancer. It’s a testament to their selflessness and the incredible power of human kindness.
We hope this film honours those volunteers and inspires others to consider joining the team. If you have a listening ear, a compassionate heart, and a desire to make a real difference in your community, there are volunteering opportunities available.
Thank you to every volunteer who dedicates their time and energy to Wessex Cancer Support.
