Protecting those who need it most: Safeguarding in the Voluntary and Community Sector

The Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) is the backbone of our communities, supporting a diverse range of people – from children in after-school clubs to vulnerable adults attending lunch clubs. Despite their differences, all VCS organisations share a critical responsibility: safeguarding the wellbeing of those they serve.

Safeguarding: Building trust and creating a safe space

Safeguarding goes beyond preventing harm. It is about fostering trust, creating a safe environment and being vigilant in identifying potential risks. By implementing strong safeguarding practices, VCS organisations can:

  • Build stronger relationships with the people they serve by demonstrating a commitment to their safety and well-being.
  • Empower staff and volunteers to recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns.
  • Facilitate social cohesion where people feel connected and supported. When everyone is protected, it contributes to a harmonious and resilient community.

Long-term impact

Safeguarding today ensures a better future. Children protected from abuse grow up to be healthier, more productive adults. By safeguarding vulnerable populations, we break cycles of harm and create positive legacies.

Safeguarding is not just an obligation — it’s a shared commitment to creating a safer, more compassionate world.
