Community residents to shape future health services

Published on 3 February, 2026

Community Action Network (CAN) is working with NHS Dorset to gather community insights on an approach called Patient Activation. This method helps health professionals understand a person’s knowledge, skills, and confidence in managing their own health and wellbeing.

Patient Activation uses a simple question: “How good are you at taking care of your health?”

The answer helps identify what level of support someone may need. Evidence shows that people who feel more confident in managing their health often experience better outcomes, and that activation levels can be improved with the right support.

CAN has been invited to test this approach with local communities and share their feedback with NHS Dorset. To support this, CAN has created a video that explains what Patient Activation is, why it matters, and how it could help shape more personalised care. Residents are encouraged to watch the presentation and complete a brief questionnaire to share their views.

Sam Bingham, Development Manager from Community Action Network, said: “We’re passionate about ensuring Dorset communities have a strong voice in shaping services that affect them. This is a great opportunity for people to influence how health support is offered locally,  whether through the NHS, community groups, or wider networks.”

CAN is asking partner organisations, community groups, and local leaders to share the presentation and questionnaire widely to help reach as many residents as possible.
