We’re sharing a short film celebrating the incredible work of Betty, a Lifetime Contribution Award nominee at the Voluntary Service Awards 2025. Betty is the Chair of Kushti Bok, a Traveller-led charity supporting Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller (GRT) communities in Dorset and beyond.
For many years, Betty has been the heart and soul of Kushti Bok, tirelessly working voluntarily to champion the rights, well-being, and cultural recognition of GRT communities across Dorset and the South West of England. Her unwavering dedication embodies the values of determination, passion, integrity, and “heart-work.” Betty’s commitment to her values and the benefit of the wider community is her driving force, always acting voluntarily and without seeking recognition.
Kushti Bok delivers vital support services, offers cultural awareness training, and provides crucial policy advice. The charity strives to promote fair treatment, improve access to resources, and foster stronger, more inclusive community connections.
One of Betty’s most impactful achievements has been spearheading a vital partnership project with Citizens Advice. This has allowed a significant number of Travellers to benefit from dedicated guidance and support through the Advocacy Project, making a tangible difference in their lives.
Betty ensures that Kushti Bok not only runs professionally and supports the community directly but also works tirelessly to raise awareness within the wider local community about GRT culture and the prejudice they often face due to their ethnic background. Her passion for helping the community shines through in every action.
