Home Library Volunteer

Posted on 29 September, 2026

Home Library Volunteers work alongside their local Library to deliver and collect books and CDs to people of all ages, who are housebound, have mobility issues or Caring responsibilities.
The service is also a chance for regular, friendly social connection with someone where you can check they’re safe and well, chat about books, listen to their reading preferences and report any concerns to the right people.
Our current need is for Volunteers in the Poole area to support readers in Care Homes/Sheltered Housing.
You’ll need a friendly personality with good communication and listening skills, with a non-judgemental attitude towards someone’s circumstances and be able to keep things confidential.
You may work on your own or with other Volunteers, it will depend upon the situation, but we will ensure you feel part of a team making a real difference to people who enjoy reading but cannot access books easily.

The commitment is usually every 4 weeks, for about 3 hours, on a pre-arranged date and time so our readers know when to expect their Volunteer.

Royal Voluntary Service is one of the UK’s largest voluntary organisations so you will be joining other volunteers committed to making a difference. Training will be given either online or, if that is not your thing, in printed format.
You will be required to be accredited through the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS).
