Global Network for Age-Friendly Communities

Published on 29 May, 2024

We’re thrilled to announce that Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole have been accepted into the World Health Organisation’s Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities (GNAFCC), thanks in part to the work supported by CAN. This prestigious recognition signifies our commitment to creating an age-friendly community that supports healthy aging, independence and values the contributions of older residents.

Community Collaboration: Building an Age-Friendly Network

BCP Council partnered with key organisations to mobilise community support. Prama Life, the grant-giving McCarthy Stone Foundation (Chair of the Partnership), Bournemouth University’s Participation In Education and Research (PIER) department, Dorset Health Care and Poole u3a, joined forces to establish the Age-Friendly Network across the area.

Nearly 200 individuals and 90 organisations, including businesses and the VCS, actively participate in enhancing age-friendly initiatives. Some of these include:

  • Supporting the Christchurch Community Partnership to reduce isolation and create a new monthly Sunday lunch session.
  • The creation of a Community Café at Winton Salvation Army to support older adults and vulnerable individuals.
  • Boosting confidence through the Wardrobe Foundation by enabling them to increase the provision of ‘Golden Rails,’ providing fresh wardrobes for women in need.

The vision of the partnership is to ensure that local services and buildings are accessible to everyone. Together, we can create a vibrant and inclusive environment where everyone can enjoy a good life as they age.
