How volunteering helped one man find a new beginning

Imagine feeling lost and like you have nowhere to turn. That’s how Dan felt after facing some tough times, including overcoming a gambling addiction. But then, something amazing happened: he found volunteering. He became a superstar volunteer at Poole Waste Not Want Not (PWNWN), a social supermarket in Poole. This isn’t just any volunteering role for Dan – it’s been a lifeline.

“I could have just given up, but volunteering gave me something to do, a purpose.”

Knowing he needed a fresh start, Dan, who used to run his own housing clearance business, wanted to keep busy and active. He decided to see if the local social supermarket needed any help. It took courage for Dan to walk through those doors. He wasn’t sure if anyone would give him a chance, especially because of his past. But when he spoke to Erika, the Manager, he felt comfortable enough to be honest about everything he’d been through. He shared his story, and Erika and the team at welcomed him with open arms.

“I was grateful to have been given a chance”

Dan’s honesty is a big part of what makes his story so inspiring. He was upfront about his journey, showing strength and a commitment to his new path. In return, Poole Waste Not Want Not (PWNWN) offered him more than just a task to do; they gave him a sense of belonging and a reason to get up in the morning. Now, Dan is a key part of the team, helping to manage all the donated food that goes to people in our community who need it most. His hardworking nature and organisational skills help ensure people have access to the food they need. The atmosphere at the social supermarket is all about teamwork and looking out for each other, with volunteers from all walks of life coming together to make a difference.

Dan’s journey is proof that people can turn their lives around and shows the importance of community support. After working hard to overcome his addiction, he realised he could build a new life where he could contribute.

“I had lost everything, I now have everything, I am ME again”

Dan was awarded the Inclusive Volunteering Awards at the CAN Voluntary Service Awards 2025, due to his resilience and his dedication to PWNWN. He’s not just someone who helps with the food; he’s a role model for others who might be facing their challenges. Dan brings a lot of empathy to his volunteering and helps create a friendly and welcoming place where everyone feels included.

But most importantly, Dan is making a real difference in the lives of people in Poole. His journey from needing help to actively helping others shows the power of second chances. Volunteering has given D’ a new sense of purpose, and his commitment makes him a truly deserving winner.
