We’re shining a spotlight on the incredible work of the Citizens Advice Witness Support Service in Dorset, finalists for the Voluntary Service Awards 2025. This dedicated team of 30 volunteers provides invaluable support to victims and witnesses attending criminal trials at Bournemouth Crown, Poole, and Weymouth Magistrates’ Courts.
Imagine facing the daunting experience of giving evidence in court. The anxieties, the emotional vulnerability – it’s a challenging situation for anyone. That’s where the Dorset Witness Service volunteers step in, giving up a day each week to make a real difference.
These compassionate individuals understand the unique needs of each witness. They offer bespoke support, ensuring a full understanding of the trial process and the witness’s role within it. From explaining courtroom procedures to describing the roles of various participants, they ease anxieties and empower individuals to give their best evidence. Where special measures like video screens are in place, they explain how these work. They meet and greet witnesses on arrival, escorting them to dedicated waiting rooms away from public areas. They remain with the witness until they give evidence, ensuring any issues or questions are addressed. If requested, they will sit with the witness in court while they give evidence.
Beyond the practical support, these volunteers address the emotional needs of witnesses with genuine care and empathy. They engage in conversation, actively listening to their concerns and working with other court stakeholders to provide comprehensive support. 90% of witnesses using the service report complete satisfaction.
The impact of the Dorset Witness Service extends beyond individual cases. They are recognised by the local CPS, Dorset Police, and the Court Service as an integral part of the criminal justice system, adding real value to the process. Their dedication not only helps witnesses feel supported and informed but also contributes to better quality evidence and ultimately ensures justice is served. Through their time spent with witnesses, the team often identify other needs beyond just the court appearance. This results in over 25% of witnesses being referred to other support agencies after leaving court.
Let’s celebrate these community heroes – the Citizens Advice Witness Support Service volunteers in Dorset. Their selfless commitment and unwavering support make a profound difference in the lives of those navigating the often-intimidating court system.
