Supporting Mental Health Through Connection – A reflection from the Trusted Reviewer team

Published on 15 May, 2025

In Mental Health Awareness Week, the Trusted Reviewer team at CAN has taken time to reflect on our project’s positive impact on the mental health and wellbeing of the people we support.

Our team works closely with older adults and people with disabilities to explore what truly matters to them. By using a person-centred approach, we help individuals identify and access a wide range of local activities, groups, and day opportunities that align with their interests and needs.

Research consistently shows that meaningful engagement with the local community can enhance mental health through fostering connection, purpose, and a sense of achievement. However, many people face real barriers—whether emotional, physical, or practical — that can make accessing these opportunities feel overwhelming or even impossible.

That’s where the Trusted Reviewer team steps in. We’re proud to support individuals in navigating these challenges, offering tailored guidance to help people take that often-daunting first step towards community involvement.

Through one-on-one conversations, we listen to people’s stories, understand their aspirations, and provide personalised support to address factors that may affect their mental health. We’ve also developed online tools containing guides to local opportunities that empower individuals to explore what’s available in their own time and at their own pace.

Looking ahead, we’re committed to deepening our partnerships with local organisations and expanding our reach, so that even more people can benefit from the support we offer.

Together, we’re building more connected, inclusive communities—and supporting better mental health for all.
