Our new short film shines a spotlight on the incredible work of Safe and Sound Dorset and one truly remarkable volunteer, Geal Stansfield. Geal, the well-deserved winner of the Heart of Gold Award at the Voluntary Service Awards 2025, embodies the very essence of dedication and compassion. Since 2017, she has been a pillar of support for Safe and Sound Dorset.
A tireless advocate for the most vulnerable
Geal’s commitment begins on the streets of Boscombe, where she spends Friday nights meeting women who are isolated, at risk, or experiencing homelessness. But her dedication doesn’t stop there. Geal consistently goes above and beyond, providing individual attention to women who might otherwise fall through the cracks. She helps them attend crucial weekly creative sessions, offers lifts to therapeutic trips to places like Brownsea Island and Pony Palace, and even takes anxious women to hospital appointments, understanding the immense stress these situations can cause.
Creating a haven of calm and creativity
Every Wednesday afternoon, Geal is a welcoming presence at the women’s creative session, making sure everyone feels comfortable and can participate in activities like craft, painting, chair exercises, and aromatherapy. Her calm, steady presence and non-confrontational demeanour are invaluable, especially for women grappling with anxiety. She understands the profound difference it makes to have a supportive presence nearby, making stressful situations far more bearable.
Safe and Sound is so proud to have Geal as part of the team. Even after recently retiring from her NHS job, her passion for volunteering remains as strong as ever. Her friendly smile and quiet, unwavering support are a testament to her “Heart of Gold.” Thank you to Geal for her continuous support, dedication, and the countless lives she has touched. We can’t wait for you to see Geal’s incredible story brought to life.
