What an inspiring day it was at the Spire Poole as volunteers gathered for an intensive training session for the We CAN Talk About Cancer project! This vital initiative is all about empowering individuals and communities across Dorset with the crucial knowledge to spot early signs of cancer in those they care for and know what to do next – knowledge that can truly make a life-saving difference.

The training day, led by Hannah and Bethan from CAN, was a huge success, with two fantastic trainers from Cancer Research UK, Mary and Amanda, providing invaluable insights. Our volunteers, Mike, Sam, Amy, Tolu, Geoff, Kinga, Hannah, Lorraine, Katie, and Bekki, immersed themselves in learning how to deliver engaging and informative presentations on cancer knowledge, prevention, screenings and more.

Why is this so important? Early detection of cancer significantly improves treatment outcomes. The We CAN Talk About Cancer project aims to bridge the knowledge gap by offering short, impactful presentations specifically tailored for:

  • Carers
  • Care home staff
  • Charities
  • Community groups

Each session provides potentially life-saving information, followed by an open discussion and a Q&A to ensure everyone’s questions are answered. Whether a group prefers an online presentation or an in-person visit, our volunteers are ready to come to you!

Following the comprehensive training, attendees received a certificate along with digital badges to display on their emails or social channels.

And the exciting news? Our newly trained volunteers will begin delivering these crucial presentations next week, reaching care homes and various settings across Dorset! Their dedication means that more people in our community will gain the knowledge to protect themselves and their loved ones.
