CAN’s collaboration with Tricuro Parkstone Connect Hub and Parklands Court Assisted Living Centre brings together older adults from across the community. Led by CAN Trusted Reviewers alongside a colleague from the Ethnically Diverse Community Programme and members of the local Brazilian community group, we hosted a vibrant and joyful Brazilian Cultural Cuisine event.  A celebration of connection, culture and healthy living.

The day began with a warm Brazilian welcome featuring a selection of refreshing tropical juices, including guava, pineapple, and coconut water. This offered a perfect opportunity for participants to get to know each other in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere before heading out on a short shopping trip in the local area. Equipped with shopping lists, most participants visited the local Makkah food store on Ashley Road, where they explored new ingredients and learned about exotic fruits and Brazilian staples. Others stayed at the centre to enjoy carnival-inspired arts and crafts, including mask-making.

Back at the centre, volunteers from the Brazilian Spiritist Society led a hands-on cooking class. Participants got involved in preparing a traditional Brazilian meal, picking up new skills and sharing cultural knowledge, while others continued crafting and enjoying uplifting Brazilian music in the background. Following the cooking and creative craft sessions, a qualified nutritionist delivered an informative talk on healthy eating, covering topics on food groups, portion sizes, hydration, and the importance of staying active as we age. Attendees received “Eating, Drinking and Ageing Well” booklets and recipe books from Access to Food Partnership, providing ongoing encouragement to maintain healthy living habits.

The day ended with everyone coming together to share the Brazilian meal, socialise, and take part in a community quiz. It was a heartwarming end to a day filled with learning, laughter, and new friendships. A special thank you to SEDCAT for providing transport for participants from Parklands Court and Parkstone Connect, making it possible for everyone to enjoy the day’s activities.

This uplifting day was a fantastic example of community spirit, cultural exchange, collaboration and the power of partnership working. This activity is part of CAN’s support to the day centre community hub development and engages older people in the Five Ways to Wellbeing (connection, being active, learning, taking notice and giving). We’re looking forward to more events that explore global cuisines and traditions, right here in the BCP area, as we continue to connect local communities through food, creativity, shared experiences and health and wellbeing. One meal and one conversation at a time.
