Win on Waste

Community Hero in the Spotlight, August 2024

It’s Zero Waste Week from 2nd – 6th September and our Community Heroes in the Spotlight for this month help people prevent hard-to-recycle waste from going into landfill. Win on Waste has been running recycling projects in the BCP and Dorset Council areas since 2013. They hold monthly collection sessions across the county and collect hard-to-recycle waste such as biscuit packets, Pringles tubes and other mixed-material waste.

They use much of this waste to fundraise for Win on Waste and other good causes. See a full list of their sessions with a new session starting in Southbourne on 21st September, at Immanuel Church, Southbourne, from 10.30-11.30.

The volunteer team welcome people to bring along a range of hard-to-recycle items, such as Pringles tubes, Dental waste and corks and these items will be used to raise funds for local and national charities. For example, when ringpulls are donated they go off to make products like these bags (pictured) which are sold to raise money to support families in the Philippines.

In 2022/23, Win on Waste collected over 3 tonnes of waste, which was donated to local and national good causes. 4000 local households regularly donated items to their sessions, with new donors coming along each week.

Win on Waste’s sessions rely on local volunteers who share their vision of reducing the amounts of waste that end up in landfill, and also love to share their knowledge and experience of living more sustainable lives.

If you’re interested in volunteering at any of the sessions, please get in touch with Win on Waste.

Along with the monthly collection sessions, Win on Waste has directories that match up local organisations and charities with items being thrown away.

We Need That! is a directory of items such as milk bottle tops and biscuit wrappers collected by individuals and organisations, who make money for charity by exchanging recyclable items for funding.

Decluttering? We Need That! is a directory of larger items that may not be able to be exchanged for charitable funds, but can be donated to businesses and individuals who can need them. If you’re decluttering your home, this is your place to come! If you represent a local charity that raises funds with recycled items, or have specific needs for project work that might be met in this way, contact Win on Waste.

For Schools and Businesses
Win on Waste can come and speak to schools and businesses to share ways to encourage greener living. While there are many options to reduce costs such as using LED lighting, turning off computers at the end of the day and reducing printing, Win on Waste focuses on recycling projects; to assist in identifying solutions for local need which benefit the environment and local people.
