Winter is here, and our community needs to be prepared. The voluntary and community sector (VCS) play a crucial role in keeping people safe during cold weather.
The UK Government’s Cold Weather Plan outlines how the VCS can help protect vulnerable people during cold weather. By staying updated, helping those in need, collaborating with local councils, and using the Cold Health Alert Action Cards, VCS groups can make a big impact.
Here are some tips for VCS groups to stay prepared this winter:
- Stay informed: Check weather forecasts and share alerts with your community.
- Know the alert levels: Learn about the different alert levels (Level 0 to Level 4) and what actions you need to take for each one.
- Take the right actions: Follow the specific steps for each alert level to keep your community safe.
- Help vulnerable people: Focus on the elderly, those with chronic illnesses, and the homeless. Provide or signpost for warm clothes, blankets, and hot meals.
- Work together: Coordinate with local councils and health services. Engage volunteers to help.
- Promote health and safety: Share health advice and have an emergency plan ready.
- Update your plans: Regularly check and update your cold weather plans based on the latest advice and past experiences.
