Community Hero in the Spotlight, May 2024

Our theme for Community Heroes in the Spotlight this May is Dementia Action Week, 13th – 19th May. Immanuel Church, Southbourne provide a wide range of weekly events for people with Dementia and their carers.

The weekly events include:

  • Memory Lane
  • Songs for the Mind
  • Music Hall Sing-Along
  • Community Lunch
  • Tuesday stroll
  • Wellbeing120
  • Friday Film Club and more!

Immanuel Church hosts a monthly Carer’s Support Group and Friendship Club and an ‘AfterCare’ bereavement support group that meets monthly, is peer-led and is there for people after the loss of the person they cared for. Immanuel Church is also a help to their community as they host:

  • A Foodbank, which operates 3 times a week
  • Citizens Advice
  • Seated exercise classes
  • Cycle Without Age.

The church has a welcoming café called ‘Jubilatte’ (which means Rejoice) and is open to the public Monday – Friday from 9:30 am-3 pm, serving light bites, and drinks.

The cafe is a great space for all community members to enjoy a healthy low-cost meal. The Café also offers a ‘Free Food Fridge’ and a variety of breads/pastries, collected from local supermarkets, which are free to take, as needed.

Liz Carter from Immanuel Church was interviewed on Hope FM with our Engagement Lead, Hannah Rees.
