Our Community Hero in the Spotlight for April is Win on Waste – a local charity which is based around a series of monthly sessions at which they collect hard-to-recycle waste such as crisp packets, Pringles tubes and other mixed-material waste.
Win on Waste started life in October 2013 as Ideas2Action. With their first project called Win on Waste – Canford Heath. Now they run 9 different sessions across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole and the wider Dorset.
They have community-based teams made up of volunteers who share their vision of reducing the amounts of waste that end up in landfill, and love to share their knowledge and experience of living more sustainable lives with their communities.
Win on Waste maintain the ‘We Need That’ and ‘Decluttering?’ directories, which aim to match up local organisations and charities with items that are, potentially, being thrown away.
They are keen to support communities and organisations across the UK by launching their ‘How to’ pack, written with all the expertise and knowledge of spending nearly 10 years doing the work they do to enable them to do work like them.
They also offer online support and discussion to connect groups holding waste collection sessions like theirs forming a truly national network.
Listen here to CAN’s Emma Lee and Stacey Wood from Win on Waste, talking to Blair about our Community Hero in the Spotlight initiative and the amazing work they are doing. |
