Celebrations for National Windrush Day and Refugee Week UK

During Refugee week, BEAF Arts Pavilion activities included cyanotype printing as part of the Seeking Refuge Project and tile decorating for the Dignity Centre. The ‘Journeys of Resilience Exhibition’ was on display, which included work produced by African artists and descendants of the Windrush generation. ‘A Seat at the Table’ (pictured), is a communal work of embroidered plates of food inspired by the countries of people seeking refuge in the UK, currently staying in Bournemouth. Each dish represents a culinary tradition from a country where people seek refuge in the UK.

‘Welcome Postcards’ was a collaborative installation of postcards and drawings created in local schools during educational workshops led by artists Sharon James and Karina West. Pioneers who arrived on the MV Empire Windrush in 1948, and those who came on vessels and planes in the decades afterwards inspired these works.

Barbara Majek produced three drawings titled ‘Green fingers, wind, feed(in)’ and a film titled ‘Scattered seeds, Moving sanctuaries’ exploring the relationship between nature, mythology, horticulture and migration.

‘Flags of the Caribbean’ was created to celebrate the Windrush Generation’s impact on UK society. BEAF commissioned artist Kemba Earle to create a brand new flag commission on Boscombe High Street celebrating Caribbean music, food, hair and carnival culture. We can’t wait to see what they have planned next!
